love from lubbock...

A few days ago we received a little care package from a dear woman in our previous church in Lubbock, where we did RUF (at Texas Tech) for seven years before moving to Virginia.

She wrote a beautiful card, which brought me to tears.  I miss so many of the families from that church, and we have such sweet, sweet memories with our students there.  I felt so loved as I went through everything in the package for the kids, thinking how amazing that even years later, she would care enough to think of us in this way.

This week we also had the privilege of hosting someone from our Lubbock church who was in town to finish an online course at Liberty, so I got a little piece of West Texas right here in Central Virginia!  It was so fun to talk about a unique place with wonderful people that we love so much.

It's hard to believe it's been five years since we moved (Caroline was only 2 1/2 months old!) because we've still got our guns up!  (If you look close, even Jameson is trying to make the "guns up" sign- ha!)  Thank you so much, Brenda, for these super cute Red Raider pj's!  They are perfect!

And are we looking at a future Red Raider athlete in the making??  :)

"YEAH!" he says.  (he he he!)

Guns up!  Raider Power!

We love you, Brenda, and all of our Lubbock friends!

the ripple effect...

I'm pretty convinced there is nothing better than campus ministry. (I'd maybe even arm wrestle you over it.) I know of very few other vocations that get the privilege of reaching into people's lives at such a monumental, life-shaping time and then after a few short years, they are sent out to the uttermost parts of the earth to (hopefully) continue the work of the Kingdom in all sorts of vocational callings and geographical locations! While it can sometimes be frustrating, exhausting, and heart-breaking in the short-term, it is overwhelmingly rewarding in the long term.

We constantly have to remind ourselves that campus ministry isn't a short-term endeavor. Though it certainly feels like we only have a few short years to labor alongside these students as they face incredible challenges, pressures, and temptations, it's easy to forget about the long haul. (it's probably the same way in parenting, I'd guess...)

But we've always said the success of RUF (Reformed University Fellowship, our campus ministry) is not something we can look at in one semester, or even one year. We'll know in 5, 10, or 15 years when we see what kinds of stay-at-home moms we've touched. We'll know when we see what kinds of businessmen, what kinds of doctors and lawyers and interior designers and teachers and nurses and architects we've produced. We'll know when we see what kinds of church members and community servants come out of RUF.

It's the ripple effect. We reach and equip for a time, and then we watch the ripple effects of our ministry. It's the most beautiful part of campus ministry!!

And this past weekend, we were blessed to see just a few of the ripple effects as we were reunited with several former RUF students from Texas Tech. (where Marc served as campus minister from 2001-2008. Many are not pictured, unfortunately, but you'll get the idea...)

In Dallas, we met up with students that were involved in our very first year in RUF. (it was also the first year of RUF at Texas Tech!) What a joy to see them now as parents. As husbands and wives. As teachers in the poorest schools of Dallas, taking the transforming power of the Kingdom to places that we otherwise tend to avoid. As church members who are struggling to find and create true community. As librarians and tutors and engineers and pastors who love the Lord and are serving Him in their various callings.

What a JOY it was to laugh together, to catch up, and to remember old times! It was way too short. But our Dallas crew gave us a glimpse of the ripple effect 10 years later.

We were also SO privileged to take a trip over to Lubbock and see many of our former RUF students and alumni there. (Caroline even got to do "guns up," too!) I just can't put it into words how much we love each one of these people... both while they're in our ministry, and long after they're gone. It is like a slice of heaven when we are able to be in the same room again. (can you tell I'm a proud "mama" yet??) :)

We were also able to visit our former church in Lubbock and spend time with friends there. It's just amazing how much you feel "filled up" when you're in community and visiting old friends. The pains you feel are so alleviated-- it's wierd how that happens. The opportunity to laugh together and cry together?... oh, my cup overflows. It was better for my soul than any Hawaii vacation.

Plus, I got to meet new additions to our church family, too. :)

We loved visiting old neighbors, too.

We praise God for the way He has blessed us with knowing so many dear friends, many of whom read this blog! We are so rich with love. We are so grateful. I pray He will continue to use us in years and years to come for His glory.

west texas...

Here's a few images of things we've missed from West Texas...

(everyone who's ever driven the 5 hr. drive from Dallas to Lubbock knows the disappointment of seeing this sign as it's there to greet you when you finally reach 84 from I-20 & you're tempted to think you're almost there!)

We've missed our former cat, Stonewall, who stayed back in West Texas with neighbors. Stonewall's sister, Jackie, :) (do ya think we were meant for Virginia or what when we name our cats Stonewall & Jackie?!?) is happily living with a former student in Florida.

In West Texas, you get HUGE, beautiful sky. And lots of wind. (don't know that I miss the wind part, though...)

And another thing we've missed...

Josh Collins' explanations that leave us all cracking up. :)

red raider...

It started as a baby, folks, and these guys refuse to give up.

I think they're gonna make me a Texas Tech fan one way or the other. And what can I say? Even though I'm a proud Virginia girl now, I WAS a Texas Tech baby. (what's the saying? "You can take the baby out of Texas, but you can't take the Texas out of the baby"...)

So get your guns up, Raiders!

He he he he....

p.s. and speaking of Texas... happy birthday, Pop!

#1 fan...

It's another gameday, folks, and I've got my guns up for Texas Tech at the Cotton Bowl this afternoon! (well, I guess it actually looks more like a Star Trek hand sign, but that's okay! I just started waving a couple days ago, so mark me down for another milestone...)

How DO I get my gun up with this thing?!?

Anyways, I'm super pumped about the game! I'm Tech's #1 fan, you know...

What?! You mean I can't watch it from my pink bathroom?!

Addendum: I'm starting to think I'm jinxing the team because both times I have told you guys to root for Texas Tech, they've lost both big games! So maybe next season I'll be a little more hush-hush... :)

wreck 'em...

Even from Virginia, our guns are up for Texas Tech! If you haven't payed much attention to college football, Tech is undefeated and currently holding the NATION'S longest winning streak! We're ranked #2 in the nation & tonight (in just a few minutes!) we're playing #5 Oklahoma IN Oklahoma, so we're a bit nervous, but hoping for the best...

Today our family showed our team spirit and I showed off my cute boots! :) Because she was wearing her Tech sweatshirt, people were even stopping Mommy in the grocery store today and showing their support! It's so crazy that even in Lynchburg, Virginia, people now know about Texas Tech!

We are just wondering if we jinxed the team for the past 7 years because the year we leave Lubbock, they have the best season in school history! ha! And just in case anyone is wondering, even Liberty students cheer on other schools like Virginia Tech or UVA, so no one seems to have a problem with us remaining Texas Tech fans. We have even converted a few of our current students to be Tech fans! :)

So everybody get your guns up with us! Wreck 'em, Tech! Hopefully the victory bells will ring tonight!

Addendum: as we're sitting here watching Tech get KILLED by Oklahoma and making practically every mistake in the book, we're disappointed and depressed. So don't rub it in, alright? :)

a look back... part 1

During our trip in Lubbock, our friend, Emily, gave us several pictures that she had taken while we lived there! There are too many great ones to post! So here are just a few of them that I loved...

The day after we got home from the hospital!

3 days old!

I can't believe how tiny she was!

At 2 months, she was already a silly gal... :)

a look back... part 2

More of Emily's great pictures...

(this one's framed & hanging on our mantle!)

This was taken at the end of our last meal in Lubbock with our dear friends & pastor, Jim & Emily. Leaving was so tough.

reflections from mommy...

We made it back home to Virginia today! Caroline was an amazing traveler- she slept some on both flights, and while she was awake, some grandparents sitting behind us on the plane practically BEGGED us to let them hold her. (their grandchildren are 8 yrs. old and up, so they told us how much they missed holding babies! They fell in love with her and Caroline certainly loved smiling and jumping on their laps, too. It is so sweet to see how much joy she spreads just by flashing that smile at total strangers...)

But I just wanted to take a minute to thank all of you, friends, family, (and even those of you we haven't met!) for your prayers, encouraging words, and tears of joy alongside us! Gotcha Day was the perfect way to end a WONDERFUL visit to Lubbock. We loved seeing so many of you again, and how we have missed you! But we also left Lubbock re-energized about God's calling us to Lynchburg, and as hard as moving away has been for us these past few months, we are looking forward to "digging in" here more and continuing to settle into our new HOME. This takes time, as you understand... (for any of you who have moved recently, here is an EXCELLENT article that was so encouraging to me)

I also can't talk about our Gotcha Day without mentioning you, Megan. (Caroline's birthmother) You have made our dream come TRUE! I can't thank you enough, and I can't imagine loving my daughter (and yours!) any more than if she had come out of my own tummy. Even though she's now a Corbett, I believe it is her right and PRIVILEGE to know you, and I don't want to deprive HER of the chance to know YOU. (or deprive YOU of the chance to know HER) We look forward to seeing you again in December!

Sweet Caroline, we "gotcha." Mommy & Daddy love you more than you'll ever know. You know, some people tell us that you're a lucky baby to have us as your parents, but we know the truth... WE'RE the lucky ones. ;-)

gotcha day!

It's my Gotcha Day! My adoption has been finalized and my name has legally been changed! What a day we'll celebrate for the rest of my life!

Daddy taking me into my court appearance... (hopefully this is the last court appearance I ever have to make... ha!)

We waited for a little bit while the judge was getting my file ready, so why not snap a few pics?

Mommy & Daddy kept saying, "I'm gonna get'cha!" Here we go into the courtroom!
